Protect Your Furry Friend From Pet Heatstroke This Summer With Our Greensboro, NC Vets

Our vets at West Market Veterinary Hospital know that during the summertime we all enjoy getting outside with our four-legged friends, enjoying all of the natural wonders that surround us here in Greensboro. However, with the warmer temperatures, there can be increased concern over pet dehydration and heatstroke. Avoiding excessive exercise and running around during the hottest parts of the day can help your pet to avoid heatstroke, and if you are going to be outdoors with your pet in the heat, make sure that you bring them plenty of cool drinking water to keep them hydrated.

Summer heat can also affect their paws when the sidewalks start to get hot, which is why the staff at West Market Veterinary Hospital advises our pet parents to be aware of any discomfort that their dog may be experiencing on their walks or other outdoor activity. Remember, if you are feeling the heat your furry friend is probably feeling it even more!

Tips from Your Greensboro Veterinarian to Help Keep Your Pet Safe

Spending time outdoors during the summer with your pet can add a lot of happiness to both your life and that of your pet. Follow these helpful hints from our veterinarian at West Market Veterinary Hospital to help keep them safe:

  • Make sure that your pet always has access to fresh and cool water, especially after spending time outdoors in the heat.
  • Never leave your pet alone in a car, even with the windows rolled down.
  • Avoid spending a lot of time outside during the hottest hours of the day between 11 AM and 1 PM. If you are out in the heat, be sure to seek out shady areas and allow your pet as many breaks as they need to rest.
  • Take your pet for their longest walks during the early morning and evening hours when the temperature is cooler.
  • Seek emergency veterinarian help if your pet shows sign of heatstroke: vomiting bile, excessive panting and drooling, confusion, lethargy, or refusal to eat or drink.

Pet heatstroke should be treated right away in order to prevent dehydration from causing injury to their vital organs such as their kidneys. If you are unsure if your pet is experiencing heatstroke or dehydration, we feel that it is always better to err on the side of caution and seek immediate veterinarian attention.
