Parasites such as ticks and fleas are not only an annoyance but they can spread disease. These parasites are often most active in summer but your pet can pick them during the year. However, in summer and spring, they are more prevalent due to the warmer weather, increasing the chances of your pet picking up these parasites. If the pests are not treated, they can lead to skin irritation and even scales and scabs on your pet. Here at West market vets, we have treatment options to both prevent and protect your pet from contracting these pests during the summer months.
Visit your veterinarian and ask for the appropriate flea treatment for your pet. Most flea treatments will last anywhere between four and six weeks depending on how often you wash them.
You should treat all your pets at the same time. If they are not all treated at the same time it could lead to a flea infestation and you could have a vicious cycle despite all your efforts.
If you have carpeted floors, consider vacuuming on a regular basis. This removes any dead fleas and ticks. Also, remember to clean your pet's bedding on a regular basis. Wash them at 60 degrees Celsius or higher so as to kill all fleas, eggs, and larvae that might be hiding in the bedding.
You might keep the tidiest and cleanest homes but ticks and fleas can still be in the house. You can use environmental sprays to kill and eradicate all fleas and ticks.
